Salesforce's CEO says AI agents let him cut support from 9,000 people to about 5,000

Marc Benioff says half of Salesforce's customer support conversations now go to AI agents. The company says it stopped backfilling roles and moved hundreds of people elsewhere. Reports describe the change as layoffs.

From the archive. First announced by Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff on The Logan Bartlett Show, August 2025. Where it stands now: Still running, as of June 2026, Salesforce, June 5, 2026. Why I saved this: A CEO saying out loud that AI agents let him cut support from 9,000 people to about 5,000 is rare. Salesforce's own statement talks about not backfilling roles and redeploying hundreds, so how the cuts happened still matters.

Previously

In October 2024, Salesforce made Agentforce generally available, with Service Agent pricing starting at $2 per conversation. Its launch proof was a Wiley manager's quote describing a more than 40% increase in case resolution over Wiley's old chatbot (Part 1).

Salesforce has now used Agentforce on its own customers, and its CEO says the result is fewer support staff. Here's what changed since Part 1 (October 2024), what it cost, and what went wrong.

Cost and outcome (as of September 2025)

  • Support headcount: "from 9,000 heads to about 5,000," Benioff said. (CNBC)
  • Share of support interactions handled by agents: "50% are with agents, 50% are with humans," per Benioff. (Fortune)
  • Support costs: down 17% since around the start of 2025, Fortune reported, citing Benioff. (Fortune)
  • Company headcount: 76,453 as of January 2025, per Business Insider. (Business Insider)
  • How the roles were removed: CNBC described the cuts as layoffs; Salesforce's statement describes not backfilling roles and redeploying "hundreds," and doesn't say how many people were let go. (CNBC, Business Insider)

What Benioff said

On an episode of The Logan Bartlett Show published Friday, Aug. 29, Benioff described what Agentforce had done to Salesforce's own support team. "I was able to rebalance my headcount on my support," he said, according to Fortune. "I've reduced it from 9,000 heads to about 5,000, because I need less heads."

He said that a year earlier, a customer calling Salesforce would have dealt with 9,000 people on its service cloud. Those interactions still happen, he said, but "50% are with agents, 50% are with humans." Fortune reported that the agents had handled over a million conversations and that support costs were down 17% since around the start of 2025.

Months earlier, Benioff had told Fortune something different: "I think AI augments people, but I don't know if it necessarily replaces them."

What Salesforce says happened

In a statement to Business Insider, a Salesforce spokesperson said: "At the start of this year we deployed help.agentforce.com. Because of the benefits and efficiencies of Agentforce, we've seen the number of support cases we handle decline and we no longer need to actively backfill support engineer roles. We've successfully redeployed hundreds of employees into other areas like professional services, sales, and customer success." It gave NBC Bay Area the same explanation, CNBC reported.

CNBC's headline says Benioff "confirms 4,000 layoffs." Salesforce's statement doesn't use the word, and neither account says how many people were let go rather than not replaced.

Not everyone accepts the AI explanation. Analyst Ed Zitron told CNBC that tech companies that over-hired during the pandemic are using AI to court investors. "It's just a growth at all costs mindset," he said.

What's changed

At launch, Salesforce sold Agentforce on a customer's improvement over an old chatbot. Less than a year later, it cites its own support staff as the case study. The claim is no longer a pilot metric; it's about 4,000 fewer support roles. Business Insider put Salesforce's total headcount at 76,453 as of January 2025, so the change Benioff described equals about 5% of the company's workforce, concentrated in one function. Benioff compared the figure with "a year ago," and the company dates its help-site agent to "the start of this year," so the change took about a year at most.

What went wrong

  • The numbers are the company's. The headcount, the 50/50 split and the 17% cost figure come from Benioff, with no outside audit.
  • The mechanism is unclear. CNBC called the cuts layoffs; Salesforce describes not backfilling roles and redeploying "hundreds." Benioff's words were "reduced it from 9,000 heads," and no named source says how many people were let go.
  • The quality data is thin. Salesforce hasn't published resolution or satisfaction rates for this period.
  • What we don't know yet: how many people were laid off versus not replaced, how many of the "hundreds" redeployed stayed, and whether customers' issues are resolved as well as before.

Our follow-up question for Salesforce

Of the roughly 4,000 fewer support roles, how many were layoffs and how many were unfilled openings?

Later developments (added Oct. 2026)

  • On Jan. 15, 2026, Salesforce said Agentforce on help.salesforce.com had handled 2.6 million customer conversations and "now resolves 63% of customer questions, with roughly the same customer satisfaction scores as human agents." It said the support team had "shrunk through attrition and redeployment." (Salesforce)
  • On June 5, 2026, Emily Winslow, Salesforce's senior director of AI product management for customer success, wrote that Help Agent "handles over 4 million conversations, achieves a 70% resolution rate, and holds a customer satisfaction score of 4.7." She set a target of 80% resolution by the end of the year. (Salesforce)
