How we know: Verra announcement (Feb. 4, 2026) and two Boomitra releases (Feb. 18, 2025 registration; Feb. 4, 2026 issuance).

Verra approves 3.03 million soil carbon credits from Boomitra's northern Mexico grasslands, the largest soil issuance once complete
Verra says that, once fully issued, it will be the first VM0042 issuance in North America. Credits cover 2019–2022 removals across about 4 million acres and 158 ranchers. Prices weren't disclosed.
February 2026 — Verra said on Feb. 4, 2026 that it had approved 3.03 million credits from Boomitra's grassland restoration project in northern Mexico. When fully issued, Verra said, it will be the largest soil carbon credit issuance to date. Here's what happened, what it cost, and what went wrong.
Cost and outcome (as of Feb. 4, 2026)
- Outcome: 3.03 million credits approved, the first in North America under VM0042, Verra says. (Verra, Feb. 4, 2026)
- Cost: credit prices not disclosed.
- Ranchers' share: at least 75% of gross carbon revenue goes to ranchers and their communities, Boomitra says. (Boomitra, Feb. 4, 2026)
- Buyers: Deloitte NSE, DP World, Ethereum Climate Platform and Restoration Climate pre-committed, Boomitra says. (Boomitra, Feb. 4, 2026)
What Verra approved
Verra said all the credits come from soil carbon gains from improved grazing and land management, across about 4 million acres of desert in northern Mexico involving 158 ranchers. (Verra, Feb. 4, 2026)
Boomitra said the credits represent over three million tonnes of CO₂e removed between 2019 and 2022, and that the project is undergoing Climate, Community & Biodiversity certification. (Boomitra, Feb. 4, 2026)
Verra noted that version 2.2 of VM0042 has been approved by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market as meeting its Core Carbon Principles. Boomitra has committed to updating to v2.2 and to using Verra's new digital soil mapping tool, VT0014, for future verifications, Verra said. Over 200 other VM0042 projects are in development. (Verra, Feb. 4, 2026)
How it got here
Verra registered the project in February 2025. Boomitra then called it the first project to use remote sensing for soil carbon measurement, said it spanned 1.5 million acres with 139 ranchers and nine partners, and said it had since expanded to 4 million acres. (Boomitra, Feb. 18, 2025)
In its 2026 release, Boomitra described the project as growing from an initial 1.4 million acres to 4 million, with 158 ranchers. (Boomitra, Feb. 4, 2026) Boomitra said in 2025 that its satellite and AI approach measures soil carbon without costly, invasive sampling, calibrated with ground-truth data. (Boomitra, Feb. 18, 2025)
The main practice is rotational grazing. Rancher Jorge Pando said in Boomitra's release that he split a 2,200-hectare pasture into 124 paddocks of about 16 hectares with solar-powered electric fences, so each paddock rests over 18 months, and that one grass species became 17. (Boomitra, Feb. 4, 2026)
Boomitra says ranchers can take part without upfront costs, internet access or specialized equipment, and that the project has been diligenced by Deloitte and rated by carbon credit rating firms, which it doesn't name. (Boomitra, Feb. 4, 2026)
Who said what
"Soil carbon is no longer an 'emerging' solution. It's here now, at scale," Boomitra CEO Aadith Moorthy said. (Verra, Feb. 4, 2026)
Verra CEO Mandy Rambharos said its role is to ensure outcomes "are grounded in rigorous science, conservative accounting, and independent verification." (Verra, Feb. 4, 2026) Boomitra said in September it was selected by Singapore's government to supply 625,000 Article 6 credits. (Boomitra, Feb. 4, 2026)
What went wrong
- Not fully issued yet. Verra describes the 3.03 million as approved and says the record applies "when fully issued." It also said more than 2.6 million credits had been issued under VM0042 to date. (Verra, Feb. 4, 2026)
- Boomitra's figures shift. Boomitra gave 139 ranchers and 1.5 million acres in 2025, then 158 ranchers and an initial 1.4 million acres in 2026. (Boomitra, Feb. 18, 2025, Boomitra, Feb. 4, 2026)
- Older methodology version. The project hasn't yet moved to the CCP-approved v2.2 of VM0042; it has committed to do so for future verifications. (Verra, Feb. 4, 2026)
- What we don't know yet: the price, and how accurate the remote-sensing measurements are against soil samples.
Our follow-up question for Boomitra
What price are the credits selling for, and how often are satellite estimates checked against soil samples?
