Agoro Carbon issues its first soil credits and makes its first delivery to Microsoft, claiming a 7.06% margin of error
The 2.6 million-credit, 12-year deal was signed in June 2025. Agoro hasn't said how many credits it has now delivered, or at what price.
September 2026 — Agoro Carbon said on Sept. 23, 2026 that Verra had issued its first soil carbon credits, covering 2021 and 2022, and that the issuance includes its first delivery to Microsoft under a 12-year, 2.6 million-credit agreement. Here's what happened, what it cost, and what went wrong.
Cost and outcome (as of Sept. 23, 2026)
- Outcome: first credits issued to two U.S. projects; first delivery under the Microsoft deal. The volume isn't stated. (Agoro Carbon, Sept. 23, 2026)
- Cost: price not disclosed. Agoro says it has paid more than $30 million in transition prepayments to producers. (Agoro Carbon, Sept. 23, 2026)
- Claimed accuracy: 7.06% average margin of error at 90% confidence, from more than 500 growers' data. (Agoro Carbon, Sept. 23, 2026)
- Status: annual issuances planned through 2037. (Agoro Carbon, Sept. 23, 2026)
The deal
Agoro announced the 12-year offtake agreement in June 2025, calling it one of the largest soil-based carbon removal commitments to date. (Agoro Carbon, June 24, 2025) The credits come from Agoro's U.S. crop and rangeland projects under Verra's VM0042 Improved Agricultural Land Management methodology, using practices such as cover cropping, improved grazing and reduced tillage. (Agoro Carbon, June 24, 2025)
"Agoro Carbon's approach to soil-based carbon removals reflects the kind of scientific rigor and long-term solution we look for in our carbon removal portfolio," Microsoft's Brian Marrs said in Agoro's 2025 release. (Agoro Carbon, June 24, 2025) Agoro says the deal came after it passed Microsoft's carbon-removal due diligence. (Agoro Carbon, Sept. 23, 2026)
How Agoro says it measured
Agoro says its carbon accounting combines field-level soil sampling, process-based modeling and independent third-party validation and verification. It reports more than 110,000 soil samples collected with stratified, GPS-verified sampling and analyzed in independent labs by dry combustion. The samples calibrate peer-reviewed process-based models. (Agoro Carbon, Sept. 23, 2026)
It claims an average margin of error of 7.06% at 90% confidence from more than 500 growers' data, which it says surpasses common industry benchmarks. Agoro doesn't name the benchmarks. (Agoro Carbon, Sept. 23, 2026)
Agoro says annual issuances from the projects are planned through 2037, and that credit supply beyond the Microsoft agreement is available to other corporate buyers. (Agoro Carbon, Sept. 23, 2026)
The credits were issued after Verra's validation and verification of VCS 3634 (cropland) and VCS 3656 (pastureland). (Agoro Carbon, Sept. 23, 2026) "This issuance reflects a rigorous, data-driven pathway from soil sample to verified credit," Verra CEO Mandy Rambharos said in Agoro's release. (Agoro Carbon, Sept. 23, 2026)
Who's enrolled
Agoro says its program spans 34 U.S. states, with more than 600 enrolled producers on 2.5 million acres, on 10-year contracts. About a third of its staff work in grower-facing roles. (Agoro Carbon, Sept. 23, 2026)
Robert Gomke, a farmer and rancher from Gildford, Mont., said in the release that Agoro helped him adopt soil health practices "we wouldn't have been able to justify otherwise" with commodity prices lean. Clint Myers of Latah, Wash., said his return per acre is "far above" what it was under conventional tillage after five years. (Agoro Carbon, Sept. 23, 2026)
What went wrong
- Fifteen months to first credits. The deal was announced in June 2025; the first credits, for 2021–22 vintages, were announced in September 2026. The deal was signed in June 2025; the first credits were issued in September 2026, for 2021–22 vintages. (Agoro Carbon, June 24, 2025, Agoro Carbon, Sept. 23, 2026)
- No volume or price. Agoro doesn't say how many credits went to Microsoft in this delivery, or what Microsoft pays.
- Accuracy is self-reported. The 7.06% margin of error comes from Agoro, with unnamed benchmarks and no independent review cited.
- Not CCP-labelled yet. Agoro plans to move to VM0042 v3, expected in early 2027, to support Core Carbon Principles eligibility for future issuances, subject to Verra and the Integrity Council. (Agoro Carbon, Sept. 23, 2026)
- What we don't know yet: how many of the 2.6 million credits have been delivered, and the price.
