Shipt puts its cart builder inside ChatGPT and Claude. Checkout still happens in Shipt.
Target's delivery subsidiary says shoppers can describe a meal plan or a party and get a ready-to-buy cart. It published no usage figures and named no spokesperson.
Previously
In February 2026, Loblaw put its PC Express grocery app inside ChatGPT. Shoppers could build a cart in the chatbot but paid on Loblaw's site. In May, CEO Per Bank said adoption was "ahead of plan," without a number (Part 1).
August 2026 — A U.S. same-day delivery service is now in two chatbots at once. Here's what changed since Part 1 (May 2026), what it cost, and what went wrong.
Cost and outcome (as of August 2026)
- Launch: Shipt apps in ChatGPT (via the Plugins directory) and Claude (via Connectors), per Shipt. (Shipt)
- Reach: more than 120 retailers; available to 80% of the U.S. population, per Shipt. (Shipt)
- Price to customers: annual membership with unlimited same-day delivery on orders over $35; no extra charge for the AI apps was mentioned. (Shipt)
- Usage, results and cost of the integrations: not disclosed.
What Shipt says it does
Shipt pitches the apps as a way to go "from conversation to cart." Its release gives sample prompts: "Shipt, build my grocery cart with five school lunches and easy weeknight dinners for a family of four," and "Shipt, plan a taco night for 12 guests and add everything I need to my cart." Others cover school spirit-week snacks and a wine and cheese night "for eight friends."
In ChatGPT, users find Shipt in the Plugins directory, connect it, type "Shipt" or "@Shipt," and pick a nearby retailer. Members can sign in so the app can see "past purchases, saved preferences, and familiar shopping habits." Shoppers can adjust quantities and swap items in conversation. To pay, they click "Open in Shipt," which opens their cart in Shipt's own checkout.
In Claude, users add Shipt from the Connectors menu, sign in or create an account, and begin a prompt with "Shipt." The release says the Claude version is aimed at "planning moments that can carry the greatest mental load," such as meal plans and gatherings. The release gives no launch date for either app beyond its own date and sends readers to Shipt.com/AI for more.
Shipt describes itself as an independently operated subsidiary of Target Corp. It runs same-day delivery for outside retailers and Target Last Mile Delivery, Target's next-day parcel service. Shipt's site footer says Shipt doesn't operate in Alaska, Wyoming or West Virginia (Shipt).
What the release doesn't say
The release describes features, not results. It names no executive and quotes no one. It gives no count of users, carts built or orders placed, and doesn't say whether orders started in a chatbot convert better or worse than those started in Shipt's app. It also doesn't say what data Shipt shares with OpenAI or Anthropic when a member signs in.
The release says shoppers can skip "jumping between search results, recipe sites, notes apps, and shopping lists" (Shipt). Shipt calls the launch "agentic shopping," but by its own description the chatbot builds a cart and a person completes the purchase in Shipt.
What's changed
In May, the series' example was one Canadian grocer in one chatbot. By August, a U.S. delivery service with more than 120 retail partners is in both ChatGPT and Claude. The model is the same: the chatbot plans and fills the cart, and the retailer keeps the checkout. That keeps payment, and the final say, with the store rather than the AI.
What went wrong
- No results. Shipt published no usage, conversion or sales figures.
- No named source. The release quotes no one, so there is no executive on the record.
- Data questions. Members can link their purchase history; the release doesn't say what the chatbot providers receive.
- What we don't know yet: how many members have connected the apps, how many carts reach checkout, and whether Target plans the same for its own site.
Our follow-up question for Shipt
How many Shipt orders have started in ChatGPT or Claude since launch, and what purchase data, if any, do those services receive?
