This page covers AI in hospitals and clinics behind the scenes: ambient scribes that draft clinical notes, X-ray reading tools, triage and booking systems, early-warning tools for nurses, and service robots.

AI scribes are spreading, with mixed evidence. In a JAMA Network Open study, burnout at Mass General Brigham fell from 52.6% to 30.7% after 84 days with an ambient scribe, among 192 respondents. The hospital system has an investment in scribe maker Abridge, the study discloses. [1] At Sutter Health, a study in the Journal of Hospital Medicine found physicians used an inpatient scribe for 3% of their notes, and daily time spent on notes did not change significantly. [3]

Other tools target speed and safety. In north east London, turnaround for the most urgent chest X-rays at Barts Health fell from 13 days to 5, the local NHS cancer alliance said. [2] In a year-long trial across 74 clinical units, a nurse-driven early-warning system was linked to a 35.6% lower instantaneous risk of death, Nature Medicine reported. [4] At a Surrey GP practice, average waits for pre-bookable appointments fell from 13 days to 4 (median 11 to 3) after AI triage, the evaluation found. Rapid Health, the vendor, co-commissioned it.
