This page covers AI in financial services where customers feel it most: chatbots and voice bots that answer service queries at banks and payment companies, and what happens to the staff around them.

Klarna is the best-documented case. In February 2024, a month after launch, the company said its AI assistant handled 2.3 million conversations, two-thirds of its customer service chats. [3] Its annual report says the AI handled 80% of customer service chats in 2025, by the company's own count. The same filing shows customer service and operations expense rose 2%, to $207 million, and full-time employees fell to about 2,831 at year-end 2025 from 3,422 a year earlier. [1] In May 2025, its CEO said two freelance human agents were live in a pilot, Fortune reported. [4]

Banks have hit harder limits. Commonwealth Bank of Australia reversed 45 job cuts it had linked to a voice bot and apologised for an "error," ABC News reported. [2] The bank later announced an A$90 million, three-year Future Workforce Program, including AI training for more than 30,000 employees. [5]

Each case below covers what was deployed, what it cost where disclosed, and what went wrong.
