Zoox starts charging for robotaxi rides in Las Vegas under a federal exemption

NHTSA's two-year exemption caps Zoox at 2,500 vehicles a year. Fares began Aug. 10, and a local taxi driver says he earns about half what he once did.

Previously

In Part 2, Zoox recalled software on all 105 robotaxis on public roads after one entered an active fire scene hidden by smoke. In January, one had stalled in a Strip intersection.

Zoox now charges for rides. Here's what changed since Part 2 (July 2026), what it cost, and what went wrong.

Cost and outcome (as of Aug. 11, 2026)

  • Federal limit: no more than 2,500 exempted vehicles for commercial deployment in any 12-month period, from July 31, 2026 through July 31, 2028. (Federal Register)
  • Fares: a base price plus distance and time, with possible destination fees. Zoox declined to give the base fare. (CNBC)
  • Riders: "nearly 1 million" across four cities since the free launch, Zoox said. (CNBC)
  • Revenue and fleet costs: not disclosed.

What NHTSA allowed

NHTSA exempted Zoox's robotaxi from portions of eight federal safety standards, including windshield defrosting and light vehicle braking, TechCrunch reported. The agency calls it the first exemption under its general authority for a passenger-carrying vehicle with an automated driving system. The exemption also comes with what NHTSA described as an "enhanced, adaptable oversight structure that can evolve as Zoox's technology advances."

"We are honored to receive the first-ever commercial exemption for a purpose-built robotaxi from NHTSA," Zoox CEO Aicha Evans said in a statement.

What commenters raised

Some organizations and individuals opposed the grant, the notice says, citing occupant safety, crashworthiness, vehicle testing, limited transparency and whether Zoox met statutory requirements. Others backed it with conditions such as safety reporting and fleet limits. The union SMART-TD and the Transportation Trades Department raised concerns about getting passengers out, since the robotaxi has no manual door controls. NHTSA answered that the vehicle has two manual ways to open the doors, including an interior lever and an exterior button for first responders.

How fares work

Zoox began charging on Aug. 10, 2026. Fares are calculated from a base price plus the distance and time traveled from pickup to drop-off, CNBC reported (CNBC). Zoox said it aims to be competitive with "comfort" level ride-hail pricing (CNBC). Riders see the full price before booking and don't pay more if the robotaxi takes a longer route, TechCrunch reported. FOX5 said some trips may carry fees at the airport, the Sphere and T-Mobile Arena.

"It's different when it's free vs. when the customer is going to pay," Evans told CNBC. She said Zoox is working with several state agencies to expand paid service.

Las Vegas is the only paid market for now. Zoox also runs free rides in San Francisco and Austin, TechCrunch reported, and will keep them free there for now. In California, Zoox still needs driverless deployment permits from the state Public Utilities Commission and the DMV, TechCrunch reported.

What a taxi driver says

Sonny Goodman, a taxi and rideshare driver, told FOX5 he now makes about half what he did a few years ago. "Now from us making, you know, $400 or $500 a day, now we're, you know, you might be looking to make $200," he said. "Why are we being replaced with a robot?" He said hotels have begun moving taxi pickups: "One by one, the hotels are starting to do that."

More competitors are coming. The Nevada Transportation Authority told FOX5 that Tesla, Waymo and Uber had applied to run autonomous ride networks and were awaiting a hearing.

What went wrong

  • Paying riders, recent recalls. Fares began on Aug. 10, 33 days after the smoke recall was reported on July 8. That recall covered every robotaxi on public roads.
  • Unchecked totals. The rider count comes from Zoox, and it won't give a base fare.
  • What we don't know yet: how many robotaxis carry paying riders, and what a typical trip costs.

Later developments (added Oct. 2026)

  • On Sept. 17, 2026, TechCrunch reported that the Nevada Transportation Authority permit capping Zoox at 100 robotaxis in Nevada would expire on Sept. 25. Zoox had about 100 robotaxis across four cities, TechCrunch said, and Las Vegas was still its only paid market. Robotaxi Tracker estimated more than 30 in Las Vegas. (TechCrunch)
  • On Sept. 23, 2026, TechCrunch reported that Zoox grounded its Atlanta test fleet after workers reported symptoms of possible toxic gas exposure. An OSHA letter said as many as 40 workers were possibly exposed; Zoox identified 28 employees in six vehicles. The purpose-built robotaxis were not affected. (TechCrunch)
