Tesla says Cybercab production has started in Texas and the cars are carrying Robotaxi riders in Austin
Tesla's filings list more than 125,000 a year of installed Cybercab capacity at Gigafactory Texas. Tesla hasn't said how many it has built, and says battery supply is limiting vehicle output.
Oct. 21, 2026 — Tesla said it began providing Robotaxi rides in Cybercabs in Austin on Sept. 3, about six weeks after its July 22 update reported that Cybercab production had begun at Gigafactory Texas. It has not said how many Cybercabs it has built. Here's what happened, what it cost, and what went wrong.
Cost and outcome (as of Oct. 21, 2026)
- Outcome: "We started providing Robotaxi rides using Cybercabs on September 3 in Austin," Tesla said, listing "Launched Cybercab into the Robotaxi fleet in Austin" as a Q3 highlight. (Tesla Q3 2026 update, filed Oct. 21, 2026)
- Cost: Tesla gave no Cybercab-specific cost. Company capital expenditures were $5.789 billion in Q2, up 142% year over year, and $4.732 billion in Q3. (Tesla Q2 2026 update, filed July 22, 2026; Tesla Q3 2026 update, filed Oct. 21, 2026)
- Capacity: Installed Cybercab capacity at Texas: ">125,000," status "Production." Tesla notes: "Installed capacity ≠ current production rate." (Tesla Q2 2026 update, filed July 22, 2026)
What Tesla reported in July
"Cybercab began production at Gigafactory Texas," Tesla's Q2 2026 update said. In its installed-capacity table, the Texas line was listed as "Cybercab >125,000 Production," alongside Model Y at more than 250,000 and Cybertruck at more than 125,000. (Tesla Q2 2026 update, filed July 22, 2026)
Tesla described Cybercab as "our purpose-built autonomous EV designed to be the workhorse of our Robotaxi fleet." It said engineering test drives of production Cybercabs began on public roads during the quarter and that it began offering employee rides in Cybercabs on the Gigafactory Texas campus in July, calling both "important precursors to Cybercab deployment." (Tesla Q2 2026 update, filed July 22, 2026)
On the supply side, Tesla said: "We are also increasing production of 4680 cells to support production ramps of both Cybercab and Tesla Semi and increased production of Model Y." (Tesla Q2 2026 update, filed July 22, 2026)
Tesla said capacity figures depend on "equipment uptime, component supply, downtime related to factory upgrades, regulatory considerations and other factors," and that limitations may be discovered "as production rates approach capacity." (Tesla Q2 2026 update, filed July 22, 2026)
What Tesla reported in October
By the Q3 update, Cybercabs were carrying riders. Tesla said cumulative unsupervised Robotaxi miles "grew eightfold quarter over quarter," to nearly 2 million, and that Austin service runs from 6 a.m. to midnight. (Tesla Q3 2026 update, filed Oct. 21, 2026)
Texas Cybercab capacity was still listed at more than 125,000 a year. Texas Model Y capacity rose to more than 375,000 from more than 250,000, and the Nevada Semi line moved from "Commissioning" to 25,000 a year in production. (Tesla Q3 2026 update, filed Oct. 21, 2026; Tesla Q2 2026 update, filed July 22, 2026)
Tesla also said it had produced and delivered its 10 millionth vehicle, and that Megafactory Texas began production with planned capacity of 50 GWh. (Tesla Q3 2026 update, filed Oct. 21, 2026)
The constraint
Tesla has named batteries as the bottleneck. In July it called battery pack capacity "the main limiting factor to near-term vehicle production volume increase." (Tesla Q2 2026 update, filed July 22, 2026)
In October it said "battery availability continued to be the limiting factor in increasing auto volumes in the quarter," while adding that it had "made additional progress in securing future supply." Texas 4680 cell capacity was listed at more than 40 GWh. (Tesla Q3 2026 update, filed Oct. 21, 2026)
What went wrong
- No unit count. Neither update gives how many Cybercabs were built or how many are in the Robotaxi fleet. (Tesla Q2 2026 update, filed July 22, 2026; Tesla Q3 2026 update, filed Oct. 21, 2026)
- Capacity is not output. Tesla's own footnote: "Installed capacity ≠ current production rate." (Tesla Q2 2026 update, filed July 22, 2026)
- Batteries limit volume. Tesla said battery availability was "the limiting factor" for auto volumes in Q3. (Tesla Q3 2026 update, filed Oct. 21, 2026)
- What we don't know yet: Cybercab build rate, cost per vehicle, and how the line performs against the 125,000 figure.
Our follow-up question for Tesla
How many Cybercabs had been built by the end of Q3 2026, and what is the current weekly rate?
