Chick-fil-A says it won't hand drive-thru orders to AI as rivals expand voice bots
CEO Andrew Cathy told CNBC the chain wants hospitality "to be human to human." An industry mystery-shop study found voice AI was faster but less accurate than people.
Previously
Wendy's said in February 2025 that its FreshAi order taker would reach 500 to 600 restaurants that year (Part 1). By June 2026, Bojangles' Bo-Linda was in 450 of 880 restaurants and White Castle's Julia in about 40. Both chains cited accuracy of 90% or more, and some customers called the experience impersonal (Part 2).
NEW YORK, October 2026 — The third-largest U.S. restaurant chain by sales says it is staying out. Here's what changed since Part 2 (June 2026), what it cost, and what went wrong.
Cost and outcome (as of October 2026)
- Decision: Chick-fil-A "will not pursue AI voice ordering in its drive-thru lanes," CNBC reported after interviewing Cathy. (CNBC)
- Scale: about 3,000 locations, $23.92 billion in 2025 system sales, and revenue up 14% to $10.3 billion, per franchise disclosures cited by CNBC. (CNBC)
- AI vs. human, industry study: AI orders were 83% accurate vs. 87% for people, but faster, at 3 minutes 53 seconds vs. 4 minutes 15 seconds. (Intouch Insight)
- Cost of the decision: not disclosed.
What Chick-fil-A said
Cathy described a "human plus" approach to technology. "From our experience, we really want that hospitality to be human to human," he told CNBC. "We're not gonna substitute that interaction with technology, because we feel like that hospitality is so important to create that warm environment for consumers."
He didn't rule out other technology. CNBC reported that Chick-fil-A is exploring AI "behind the scenes." Cathy said: "As you think about drone delivery and all the other kind of things that could be coming, it's a fun time in the industry, to think about all the possibilities of what we can do to make a better experience for our guests."
Chick-fil-A's answer to drive-thru volume so far is physical. When it unveiled new digitally focused restaurant designs in 2023, it said it wanted technology to "elevate the human touchpoints," Fox Business reported. Its elevated drive-thru in McDonough, Georgia, which opened in 2024, has four lanes and a conveyor built to deliver a meal to a team member every six seconds, Yahoo Finance reported. Customers there can order ahead in the app or with an employee. Chick-fil-A says the design handles two to three times as many vehicles as a traditional Chick-fil-A drive-thru, Fox Business reported.
What the rivals are doing
At its September investor day, McDonald's said it plans to test Archy, its voice AI, for orders in English and Spanish, CNBC reported. Wendy's has kept deploying FreshAi, built with Google Cloud, Fox Business noted. Chick-fil-A did not immediately respond to Fox Business' request for additional comment.
What the study found
Intouch Insight, a mystery-shopping firm, ran 120 AI-handled orders at three chains rolling out voice AI, between June and July 2025. AI shortened service time, but accuracy fell short of human order-takers, "most frequently attributed to order customization." When staff stepped in, accuracy rose to 95%, Intouch said, "proof that, for now, people remain critical to the process." Its full report says staff stepped in on 21% of AI orders, and customers had to repeat themselves on 34% of AI orders vs. 22% with people. In the same study, Chick-fil-A scored 87% for accuracy and 98% for satisfaction.
What's changed
In June 2026, the story was how far voice AI had spread. In October, a chain with about 3,000 locations said it won't use it in the drive-thru at all. Its argument is not that the technology fails, but that the human interaction is the product. Its bet on throughput is lanes, kitchens and conveyors rather than software at the speaker.
What went wrong
- Accuracy gap. In Intouch's sample, AI was four points less accurate than people.
- Hidden help. A fifth of AI orders needed a human, per the same study.
- No public test. Chick-fil-A hasn't said whether it ever trialed voice AI.
- What we don't know yet: what AI Chick-fil-A uses behind the scenes, and whether its stance covers app or phone ordering.

Later developments (added Oct. 2026)
- On Oct. 22, 2026, Hi Auto and Bojangles announced a multi-year extension of Bo-Linda, saying it is at "nearly 500" locations with "a 98% success rate," and that about 100 more are planned by mid-2027. These are company figures. (Business Wire)
