Audi says moving production systems to its own cloud has already retired more than 1,000 factory PCs

Audi's Edge Cloud 4 Production now runs a high-volume body shop at Neckarsulm, where about 100 robots take their commands from the cloud. Audi published no cost savings.

Audi said moving production systems to its own cloud platform, including worker guidance in vehicle assembly at its German plants, has already eliminated the need for more than 1,000 industrial PCs. The platform now also runs large-scale series production in the Neckarsulm body shop for the A5 and A6. Here's what happened, what it cost, and what went wrong.

Cost and outcome (as of Jan. 27, 2026)

  • Outcome: "The move to the cloud has already eliminated the need for more than 1,000 industrial PCs," Audi said. (Audi, Jan. 27, 2026)
  • Cost: Audi gave no figure. It said the platform "reduces maintenance costs" and lets it "reduce the amount of hardware required on site." (Audi, Jan. 27, 2026)
  • Claim: In Neckarsulm, about 100 robots "work together via the EC4P with millisecond precision," building "several hundred vehicle bodies" a day in three shifts, which Audi called "a benchmark that is unique in the industry to date." (Audi, Jan. 27, 2026)

What moved to the cloud

Audi says Edge Cloud 4 Production "makes it possible to combine conventional automation technology with flexibility and computing power from the cloud." That lets it "simplify processes, reduce the amount of hardware required on site, and introduce new functions more quickly," which Audi says makes processes more stable and improves IT security. (Audi, Jan. 27, 2026)

In vehicle assembly at German plants, worker guidance is "increasingly being controlled centrally from the cloud," with line workers getting vehicle specifications and regional versions "from a central source in real time." (Audi, Jan. 27, 2026)

In the Neckarsulm body shop for the A5 and A6, EC4P "is now being used in a highly automated production environment for large-scale series production for the first time," replacing local hardware controllers on the lines, Audi said. (Audi, Jan. 27, 2026)

AI on the same platform

Audi said its AI weld-spatter detection at Neckarsulm marks spatter on the car-body underbody with light, and "a robot arm has taken over grinding them down – a physically demanding job." The Volkswagen Group's first AI-supported weld spatter detection system "will soon go into series production at six plants in Ingolstadt." (Audi, Jan. 27, 2026)

ProcessGuardAIn, Audi's own process-monitoring AI, "monitors production steps in real time, detects anomalies at an early stage, and informs the experts." It was in pilot for two use cases at the Neckarsulm paint shop, with series introduction "planned for the second quarter of 2026." Audi said that in later stages it will give data-based recommendations and guide employees step by step through fixes via an app, and could become a central tool for predictive maintenance and quality assurance in all plants. (Audi, Jan. 27, 2026)

In the Neckarsulm paint shop, Audi is also testing AI-supported dryer control from its IPAI Heilbronn cooperation and said it "will be testing how much energy can be saved as a result until summer 2026." (Audi, Jan. 27, 2026)

Wiring next

At Ingolstadt, Audi and ten partners built a government-funded demonstrator of fully automated wiring-loom production and installation. "To date, less than ten percent of wiring loom production and assembly is automated across the industry," Audi said. For that project it claims "significantly shorter lead times for changes – minutes instead of weeks." (Audi, Jan. 27, 2026)

"Artificial intelligence is a quantum leap for efficiency in our production," said Gerd Walker, Audi's board member for production and logistics. (Audi, Jan. 27, 2026)

What went wrong

  • No savings figure. Audi says the cloud reduces maintenance costs but gives no amount. (Audi, Jan. 27, 2026)
  • Several items were still pilots. ProcessGuardAIn was in pilot, the dryer AI was being tested until summer 2026, and the wiring-loom work was a demonstrator. (Audi, Jan. 27, 2026)
  • "Minutes instead of weeks" is the wiring project. Audi's release ties that figure to the wiring-loom demonstrator, not to the cloud migration. (Audi, Jan. 27, 2026)
  • What we don't know yet: what the cloud move saved in euros, and how outages are handled when 100 robots depend on it.

Our follow-up question for Audi

What has EC4P saved in hardware and maintenance cost, and how does the Neckarsulm body shop handle a cloud or network outage?
